MESSENGER PROJECT
In my dreams it comes and speaks in an unknown language, but in my guts I know that it talks about my future. The messenger haunts and blesses me.
In Japanese culture, more specifically in the Shinto religion, the deer is seen as a divine messenger. They have long been regarded as divine envoys of the kami (Gods) of Kasugataisha Shrine. Funny enough deers always appear in my dreams, and it’s always a very mysterious encounter. Every time one of them shows itself, I know that something is going to happen in my life. kind of weird but pretty cool if you ask me. I also had the opportunity to visit the real Shika in Nara park, and after feeding and seeing the little guys I knew I had to make something art related about them.
The piece is more about the empty spaces in between the veins than the veins itself. I wanted to portray something that is physical but yet not materialized, in a process of becoming or in a representative shape of what it truly can be.
For this project I had a pretty specific way of visualizing its presentation, so I made a pretty basic and quick storyboard so that I could consolidate the beats of the video in my head. In the final version there were some minor changes in the editing but the overall structure stayed the same.
I wanted to develop this for quite sometime, but didn’t know how I could do it. I’ve been studying Geometry Nodes and when I came to this testing, I knew it was time to start the messenger project.
I confess that the most amount of time was spent in Premiere (and rendering). Like I said I had a pretty solid vision for this piece, including the sound design of it. It’s not very fancy but transmitting a spooky atmosphere is very sound oriented for me ar least, so I put a lot of effort in it. It was quite fun to go back and spend some time with this god forsaken software called adobe premiere. Making sure that every noise is in the beat and motion of everything is very satisfying, and seeing the whole project come together in here was amazing. Can’t wait to continue the development of more of these messenger deers.
